Let the Good Times Roll

July 19, 2010

A lot of fun things have been going on lately:

~ I’ve downloaded Boggle and have been playing against the computer.  I used to love this game, but sadly Randy isn’t very good at it so I haven’t played in a very long time.  That isn’t the only game I’ve been playing, though.  When the power went out the other night due to storms, he and I played Yahtzee.  I won 2 out of 3 games, but that was just blind luck.  Naturally I called an end to the games before he had a chance to catch up and beat me…

~ I had a transcontinental movie date last night with Leah.  “What is a transcontinental movie date?” you may be asking yourself.  She and I watched the same movie (“Eclipse”) at the same time.  I went to a late show, while she went to an evening show; we were watching simultaneously.  I know it sounds silly, but it was fun.  How else are you going to watch a movie with a friend who lives on the opposite coast?  We talked on the phone for about an hour and a half afterward, about the movie, and life in general.  It was the first time we’d spoken anywhere other than online.  It was pretty awesome!

~ I’m going to Atlantic City next week with another friend I met through the internet, Emily.  We’ll be gone for a couple of days, and I can’t wait!  We may be spending a day in Cape May with Dustin, which is pretty cool.  I hung out with both of them in Manhattan for a day last year, along with our friend Becky who happened to be visiting Emily at the time.  I’m so excited!  I just wish Becky could be with us again.  Maybe next year, eh Becky?

~ I’ve been slowly cleaning and organizing my house.  While this definitely does not qualify as a fun activity, the results are soothing, so it’s a win.

All in all, life’s not too shabby at the moment.

The Cold Ones, and the Warm Ones

July 16, 2010

I went to the movies lately (Eclipse, in case you’re wondering) and the theater was so freezing that, despite the heat wave, Randy and I had to turn the heat on in the truck afterward in order to thaw out!  I imagine that’s what it feels like to be surrounded by affectionate vampires who hug you all night.  You’ll understand that if you’ve read the Twilight books.  If you haven’t, well, the vampires are very cold.  My only other complaint is that there were some vocal Team Jacob girls sitting nearby who made loud comments.  It is a sign of my growing maturity (and hunger) that I did not throw my bag of popcorn at them.

I mentioned Randy just now.  Yesterday was his birthday, and our 17th anniversary as a couple.  I love him more now than I did then.  You’d think I’d be a little bored, but I’m not.  It’s amazing when you finally find that person with whom you can fall more deeply in love as time goes by, rather than out of it.  I try never to take him for granted, to let him know how very much he means to me.  There are always the daily little irritants that living with someone brings: socks left on the floor, lights or television left on in an uninhabited room, failure to wipe down the counters after making supper.  But he helps with the laundry, shuts things off when I remind him, and he cooks that meal, meaning that I don’t have to; I am perfectly capable of wiping down those counters myself.  He helps me in a myriad of ways, both large and small, and makes my life fuller and richer by his existence.  We are not exactly alike, nor are we polar opposites; we complement one another.  I can be as silly or as grouchy as I feel on any given day, and he rolls with it.  He brings me flowers and calls during the day for no other reason than to let me know he loves me.  He never complains, and lets me have the remote control whenever I want it.

I’m a very lucky woman.

If you’re reading this, I wish that you may have the sort of loving relationship in which you respect and fulfill each other, whose love grows daily and that does not merely stand the test of time, but thrives upon it.

And that you can share the television remote.

A Couple of Things

June 26, 2010

~ I finally watched “The Stand” over the past couple of days.  The effects were pretty crappy by our standards but most likely state of the art in ’94, so I’ll grant it leeway there.  It had an excellent cast, and is one of the better translations of King’s books to movies.  My only big problem was that I couldn’t find Randall Flagg at all scary.  It’s hard to take a demon from Hell seriously when he’s sporting a big bushy mullet.  The fact that he wore one, however, can stand as a testament to his evil nature.

~ I’ve continued to help my mother by driving Randy’s truck to run errands like picking up furniture or loads of mulch or topsoil.  She, in her turn, has been a gardening fiend in my flower beds.  It’s going to look amazing when she’s done!  It already looks 5 katrillion (I just made that up… take that Shakespeare!) times better than before.  There will be pictures at some point.

~ I don’t have ascites; the fluid is in my stomach, not my abdomen.  What a relief!  The gastric emptying study I underwent a couple of weeks ago indicates a problem there, so I have been put on a new medication, Reglan, which will make me sleepy.  It has some potentially nasty side effects that I have to watch out for, such as tremors and spasms, but as long as I don’t experience these I should be alright, and it should alleviate some of my symptoms.  I want to get something else checked out, but don’t want to discuss it yet.  Later, once it’s done.

~ I am so colossally lazy today that, though I’d like a bowl of cereal, I won’t have one because there aren’t any clean bowls and I can’t be bothered to wash one.  In my defense, I spent the morning ferrying topsoil to my mother’s and an old sofa of hers to the dump.  I feel I’ve expended as much energy as I’m going to today.  No, I didn’t hurt my back with either of these things.  I am the driver, nothing else.  My mother and brother did the heavy work.  I can’t emphasize enough how much it goes against the grain to watch my mother, who has her own back and cardiac issues, doing the heavy work.  She insists she’s fine, but it’s just wrong.  At least my brother was home today to do most of the work.  *sigh*

Well now, that’s 4 things, which is twice as many as a “couple.”  Having put the lie to the title of this post, I will end right here.

The End

How I Passed the Time on Tuesday Night

June 23, 2010

Last night I:

~ Made the vilest brownies known to man.  Truly.  One bite and I was gagging.  So yeah, worst brownies ever.  Won’t be following that recipe again.

~ Watched “Persons Unknown” on OnDemand with Randy, who was wearing one of my bras on his head like the nerds in “Weird Science.”  Why, you wonder, was he wearing it on his head?  Because it wouldn’t fit around his torso silly!

~ Saw a young man fly an indoor kite during “America’s Got Talent,” a show I don’t normally watch but did last night for some reason.  This man was born with debilitating epilepsy and, reading between the lines of what he and his mother said, I could tell that he has been teased his whole life because of it.  Indoor kite flying, he said, has been his way of escaping and relaxing.  It consists of pulling a large kite by 4 strings, which aren’t as long as those used with a regular kite, through the air.  Randy and I were a bit worried about him because lights can trigger a seizure, and there were tons of lights above the stage as well as a couple of follow spots, but he made it through just fine.  My husband has epilepsy, though his is well controlled by medication, so this young man touched us especially.  He flew his kite to Sarah Mclachlan’s “Angel,” making it arc and weave, dip and float; he made it dance.  It was stunningly beautiful and I found myself crying.  He blew everyone away.

With the exception of the brownies, it was an evening well spent.

In Which I Shamelessly Plug My Friends’ Work

May 27, 2010

My friends Lord Bargain (whose first book- 101 Forgotten Pop Hits of the 1980s – is now on sale) and his lovely wife Suburban Hen (whose beautiful baby quilts, jewelry, prints, and more can be found here) have entered a contest.  The object is to create a video ad for Paddy Power.  The video that gets the most hits wins £1,000.  Like the rest of us, they could really use the money, and the ad is only 32 seconds long.  It spoofs a recent event during the British elections when an incumbent candidate who had been soliciting a woman’s vote forgot that his mike was still on when he got in his car to leave.  You’ll have to watch the video to find out what the candidate said!

BTW, it’s Lord Bargain himself playing the politician, and SwissToni as the Paddy Power employee.

(and in case any of you are wondering: Yes, I would probably do the same thing for you if you needed/wanted a plug :) )

Am I A Jinx?

May 22, 2010

In the past couple of weeks I’ve been re-watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer from the beginning.  Since I’ve begun:

  • David Boreanaz (“Angel”) has admitted to cheating on his wife.
  • Nicholas Brendon (“Xander”) has relapsed and is back in rehab.
  • Emma Caulfield (“Anya”) has filed for divorce.

Some good news, though:

  • James Marsters (“Spike”) announced that he is getting married.

I think perhaps it’s a good thing I only have 5 episodes left to watch!

Ever More Randomness

May 17, 2010

~I hope when I go gray, I go the right shade of gray.  I’ve always said I wouldn’t dye my hair back; I’m not afraid of aging.  But would I dye from one shade of gray to another if I didn’t like the way it was going?  Probably not, but I wonder how often it’s been done?

~Hoping to meet up with Becky, Emily, and Dustin in NYC again soon.  I also want to swing by John Jay College of CUNY at some point, check out the neighborhood, decide whether or not I could see myself there.

~I haven’t seen them yet (obviously), but I don’t think The Gates or Law & Order: LA will last.  You read it here first.  Unless you read it somewhere else before now.

~Because of serious health problems my mother has made dietary changes and lost 24 lbs.  I have found 15 of them.

~I’m glad Sandra won Survivor.  If Parvati won I was going to bash my head into something.  Hard.  I’m serious.  I had Randy on standby to stop me and everything.

Some Serious Relaxing Going On

May 14, 2010

Have any of you seen The Men Who Stare at Goats? It’s hilarious!  Must See DVD.  Ewan McGregor somehow managed to keep a straight face while constantly discussing the Jedi with George Clooney.  It’s hysterical almost beginning to end.

We’re waiting for Eureka 3.5, NCIS Season 7, Criminal Minds Season 5, and Big Bang Theory Season 3 to become available, so Randy and I have  begun watching Castle through Netflix.  So far, so good.

As for me, I’m still working my way through Buffy.  I’m into Season 5.  I don’t sit glued to the t.v., though I’m sure it sounds like it.  I watched the series when it first aired and am often doing other things while Buffy plays in the background.  I’ve also got “Angel” in my queue and have considered watching it while watching Buffy, since there’s some crossover.  In the end I decided to skip it, mainly because it’s too much effort to try to coordinate it.  I’ll watch Angel when I’m done with Buffy.

I got a 4.0 this past semester (I now have a 3.968 overall), and have been sick since school let out, therefore feel I’ve earned a little mindless entertainment.  I’ll get back to business soon, just not yet.

Streak Broken

February 14, 2010

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but kind of surprising that it happened on a Saturday:

I missed a day here.

I had to read one of the most boring, dense articles ever written by a member of the AMA, then summarize it.

I just wrote a really long post here going into excruciating detail about just how badly both the assignment and the article sucked, but there’s no need to bore you the way it bored me.

Suffice it to say that I was both preoccupied and extremely grumpy.

But I’m sitting here now, hazelnut decaf and a soft fluffy cat next to me, and a preview of men’s figure skating on T.V.

Life improves if you live long enough.

Hello Winter Olympics- I’m so happy you’re here!

On a sad note, my heart goes out to the family of Georgian luger,  Nodar Kumaritashvili.

May the rest of the Olympics run smoothly.

Good Use of Time

February 10, 2010

Did you all enjoy Umbrella Day?

I had no need of an umbrella today but I got my snow day and, though I had a little homework to do, for the most part I gleefully neglected my studies.

I played around on the computer, gave some negative feedback to FB about its changes and then accepted their inevitability, did some assigned (but not necessarily boring) reading, and caught up on my television viewing.  And that’s when I hit pay dirt:

Craig Ferguson gave in to the Twitter bug!

You may now follow him @CraigyFerg !  Little doses of his humor throughout the day gives a little lift to the spirit, if I do say so myself.  And I do.  Or rather, in this instance, I write it myself.  Although for all you know I’m dictating while someone else is doing the actual writing.  In this instance I’m afraid you’ll just have to take my word for it.  I could vlog me writing, but I can’t imagine that would really interest anyone.  So there you have it.

Now I’m off to learn more about the ideals and realities of Islam as found in Ideals and Realities of Islam, by Seyyed Hossein Nasr, which is not as easy a read as it seems on first blush.

No Ice, Thank-You

February 8, 2010

Becky tweeted about watching Titanic late last night.  Switching channels,  I caught the last 20 minutes or so of it.  Darn it!  I go years happily without seeing it but, thanks to Becky, I then felt compelled to watch it from the beginning.  I couldn’t start watching it just then, though.  If I had it wouldn’t have ended until after 5 AM.  I went to bed instead, comfortable in the knowledge that when I woke up the urge to view would be gone.

It wasn’t.

So after taking care of some school things (or pretending to at any rate) I popped in the video – yes, I said video, not dvd – and watched it.

It’s a beautiful love story and of course I enjoy that aspect of it.  But what really gets me is the history.  The sinking of the Titanic fascinates me, and this film brings it to life in many ways; the footage of the wreck is both eerie and wonderful.  A part of me always cries out “No!  Don’t do it!  Don’t go full-steam ahead!  Who the hell cares if you get in on Tuesday instead?!  And don’t send lookouts on watch without some damn binoculars!”  And “Jack, if you’d just try to get onto that wood panel from the other side while Rose gets on from this one, your weights will balance each other out and you can both get out of the water.  Why was that too hard to figure out?”

Seriously though, it’s gut-wrenching to me to watch this glimpse of the past, to know what’s going to happen to all of those people and to be powerless to change anything.  I love history in general, some periods or events moreso than others, and I always have this reaction.

Was there an event or time period in history that affects you somehow when you think about it?

Remote Possibilites

February 3, 2010

Randy is afraid of the t.v. remote.  “I’m not afraid of it,” he just now said to me. “It’s just too technologically advanced for me.”  Yes, I’m the techie in the family.  And no, he’s not really afraid of the remote.  It’s just a complicated one and he can’t be bothered learning how to use it.  It doesn’t control the changing of the channels themselves (only the power, volume, and dvd/game functions) so “Why bother?” is his attitude.  Why bother indeed?

Still, I like to taunt him with it, making it dance or “sneak up on him” when he isn’t paying attention; I always allow him to discover it though.  Once he pulled out his cable remote (he uses an older version while I, predictably, use the upgrade) and used it to fight off the t.v. remote as though we were sword fighting.  At which point I made the t.v. remote plaintively cry in a little voice, “Why? Why don’t you like me, Randy?  Why are you being so mean?  I’ve never done anything to you!  I’ve never even touched you!  Why are you hitting me?”

You should have seen Randy’s face then.  He paused, took another half-hearted swipe with his remote towards the t.v. remote in my hand, then set his down.  Because really, what can you say to justify hitting someone who has never laid a button on you?

Bubbly

January 30, 2010

Did you remember that today is Bubble Wrap Day?

I think the excitement over the fact that today is Bubble Wrap Day (BWD) got to some people.  For example, I received an update on a credit card I thought defunct and canceled 5 years ago.  It’s okay, there was a zero balance on it.  Still, it was strange to be visited by the Ghost of Credit Cards Past and I blame the upcoming celebration of BWD for so confusing them that they forgot that account was buried a long time ago, causing them to send me notification of account changes.  I have canceled the card again and will be receiving a copy of its cancellation in the mail.  Hopefully this time it will remain in deceased.  Zombie credit cards can be such a drag, don’t you think?

Then there was notification of a change in my financial aid awards.  BWD has caused them to cancel one grant but replace the amount lost with more money poured into another grant.  Then they added on to my student loans.  Put it all together and it shows me gaining $2,000 in aid this current school year, yet I still owe the same amount out of pocket.  I am confuzzled.  Perhaps my brain, too, has been swathed with cushiony plastic on BWD?  I will have to ponder this further and perhaps contact financial aid on Monday.

I feel like watching a horror movie now, which is odd because I’m quite chipper really, and not in a body-in-the- wood chippery kind of way.  Hey, if I was rolled up in bubble wrap say 3 or 4 times around, how long do you think it would take for a knife-wielding maniac to be able to get to me?  This is purely a matter of curiosity, not an actual strategic defense plan…

If Only

January 29, 2010

Call me old and cranky if you like – I am old and cranky – but I really wish the Pitt-Jolie split rumor was true.  I’m so sick of hearing and reading about them all the time.  The name “Brangelina” makes me shudder (as does “TomKat” and any other cutesy meshing of couples’ names) and my quality of life would vastly improve if I never had to see or hear it again.

Why can’t they call it quits already and go be annoying separately?

Classics in Their Own Way

January 17, 2010

Randy was watching The Wedding Singer earlier today and I’ve been channeling the 80′s ever since.  Then LazyGal tweeted about Fluffy Bunnies which reminded me of the Cute and Fuzzy Bunnies from One Crazy Summer.  That led to Better Off Dead.

There were some really great movies in the 80′s.

When I came home from my meeting tonight (during which I gave up the aforementioned commitment as promised) Randy was watching The Andy Griffith Show.  It was the episode in which Aunt Bea decides that she wants to get her driver’s license and get a car.  She had Andy’s girlfriend and his son Opie on her side and she still had to beg Andy’s permission.  I was sputtering through the whole episode about how Andy needed a good boot up the… bottom.

It’s easy to romanticize the past but when I stop and think about it, I wouldn’t have lasted 2 minutes.  I’m not very good at keeping my mouth shut when riled, and I’m not always as polite in those situations as I am when I sit here and blog about it. ;)

Future Present Past

January 11, 2010

I have begun my final week of freedom.  That’s right, school starts up again next Tuesday.  To be honest I’m not looking forward to it.  It isn’t the classes so much – I like most of them – but the killer schedule.  I’ll have to get up around 4:30 AM twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) in order to get to school on time.  Given the trouble I have falling asleep at night, this is a problem.  To make matters worse I won’t get home until 10:30 PM on Wednesdays.  Thursday will then start early and go late as I have a class that only meets once a week on that afternoon.

I can do this.  I’ll just keep reminding myself that it’s just for a couple of months.  Still, Fridays will be for sleeping.  Don’t even bother trying to contact me on Fridays.

In the meantime I have other things to think about this week.  Tomorrow is my 39th birthday.  This year has been very funny.  An aunt who won’t be around posted a birthday message to me on FB on Saturday.  Someone misunderstood and posted happy birthday the next day.  I explained that it wasn’t my birthday yet, but it was too late.  I’ve been wished Happy Birthday 6 times between then and now.  I’m apparently well-liked, and that’s great.  But this is the longest-running birthday I’ve ever had.

Ah well.  Beats the year my family forgot it, not unlike Sixteen Candles.  Which is kind of funny too because people used to tell me I looked like Molly Ringwald when I was sixteen.  I had the hair and everything.

I really like those old John Hughes movies.  I really do.

Racing Movies

January 7, 2010

What was with rebel car racing in the 80′s?  Dukes of Hazard, Cannonball Run (and its sequels), Smoky and the Bandit (and its sequels), Six Pack, and who knows how many I’m forgetting.

I blame The Love Bug.

Should’ve Been Named Keith

January 6, 2010

Randy and I were watching the new Newlywed Game the other day; we like to play along sometimes.  The husbands were asked which of the wive’s female friends were most like a dude.  I thought about this for awhile and came to the realization:

I’m the dude in my circle of friends.

Using the criteria the contestants use, I’m the dude.  I burp.  I fart.  I’ve been known to kick a little ass.  Granted, all of this was in the past.  Oh, I still burp and fart, I just refrain from doing so in company.  And my butt-kicking days are probably behind me now; I’m old and falling apart.  Still, I have stereotypical male attitudes towards many things (when is our wedding anniversary again??), and can geek out to Star Wars with the best of ‘em.  I’ve smoked a couple of cigars and even tried chewing tobacco once (I was 11 then I think).  Both were gross, but I did it.

Ladies, you can now relax.  Because I’m the dude.

Thoughts Still Bouncing like a Pinball

January 5, 2010

~ Rudy.  Great movie.

~ Saw an ad online for an old college of mine; it included a shot of the school’s football team.  I don’t remember it having a football team.  Is it new, or was I oblivious?  Equally probable.

~ Also, there used to be a street lamp on top of the pole in front of my house, I swear there was.  But it’s gone.  Has been for at least a couple of months, most likely years.  When did this happen?  On the other hand, Randy doesn’t remember it at all.

~ I like chocolate milk.

~ I’d rather be reading now, so I think I will.  I’m reading what it says I’m reading under “Now Reading” in the column to the right.

Now You’re Cooking

January 3, 2010

There’s a new show on the Food Network called “Worst Cooks in America.”  I’m going to watch the premiere of this reality competition show because, if nothing else, it will make me feel better about my own skills in the kitchen.  My thoughts after.

Later…

Alright.  Good show.  I’m not a bad cook, I just don’t enjoy doing it very often; it’s usually Randy’s job.  While I found Chef Anne Burrell and Chef Beau MacMillan intimidating, I am an Iron Chef compared to the contestants.  One or two audition recipes literally looked like someone vomited on a plate and served it.

I’ll let you finish gagging before I continue.

Better?  Good.

The audition pieces were the worst of it, and I cheered on the hapless contestants as they tried to replicate a recipe for their first challenge.  I’m looking forward to seeing how these people progress.  Or don’t, as the case may be.

Sometimes My Mind Jumps Around

January 1, 2010

Hello 2010, nice to meet you.  I hope we’ll get along well together.

I’ve been watching a Twilight Zone marathon on-and-off since yesterday, though I took  a break to watch Rear Window and The Poseidon Adventure (original).  Rod Serling was such a good-looking man.  It was an excellent show, although prone to overacting.

I have a sudden craving for beef stew.

I wish I could try Bare Minerals makeup, but I can’t afford it.

Have you ever made coffee in the same cup that you just drank hot chocolate from?  Yummy deliciousness.

My hair has grown halfway down my back.  Randy likes it, but I’m not sure.  It definitely needs to be cut, but how short?  I now understand why my grandmother braided her hair every night before bed.  I have to do the same or risk getting scalped when he rolls over on it.

I’d never enter a heaven that didn’t allow animals.  It wouldn’t be heaven.

Along the same lines: if I ever won the lottery, animal shelters would receive a substantial windfall as well.

Still on the animal theme, I love that blissed-out look my cats get when they bathe themselves.

I think I’ll go do something else and leave you to your own random thoughts.

Withdrawal

December 29, 2009

Something evil took out our cable company’s fiber optics; cable, internet, and their phone service went out all over the northwest corner of Connecticut.  I just went without cable or internet (gasp!) for 11 hours.  I don’t actually mind not being online or not watching television when it’s my choice.  It’s having the option taken from me that makes me twitch.  It wouldn’t have been so bad if I had a decent book to read, but I didn’t.  Rather, I have unread books but none of them appealed.  Don’t you hate when that happens?  It’s not something you can force.

Anywho, I dug out my Evil Under the Sun Wii game and played that for a few hours until I got stuck and needed a break.  Randy came home and we watched several episodes of NCIS until… at last! … cable and internet returned.  Still, we love NCIS, so it wasn’t a hardship.  Did you know that Pauley Perette (“Abby”) is 40 and has a Masters in Criminology?  Cool.

All of this goes to show that I need to make a run to the bookstore soon.  Thankfully my sister gave me a gift certificate to one.

A Little About our Trip

July 23, 2009

Randy and I travelled to Gatlinburg and Nashville, TN a little over a week ago.   We do this every couple of years and always have such a great time.  This trip was a little more difficult for me because of my  back (more on that in another post) but I tried not to let it keep me from enjoying myself.  Randy, on the other hand, kept trying to rein me in.  There’s a new zip line in the Smoky Mountains, one which takes about 2 hrs to complete.  I soooo wanted to do this, but Randy wouldn’t let me.  Brat.  Okay, so he was right, but I still wanted to go!  I threatened to bungee jump instead, my argument being that it would likely realign my back for me.  He smiled and told me to go right ahead.  Of course.  Because he knew that I wouldn’t do it.  Have I mentioned that he’s a brat?

Despite the setback, I managed to go to the aquarium, the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museum, and play a little mini golf.  I also ate at the Log Cabin restaurant every morning for breakfast.  This may not sound like much to you, but once you’ve eaten there, you won’t want to have breakfast anywhere else.  I love it so much that I booked our hotel based on how close it was to the restaurant.  It had to be within walking distance, or no deal!  Who cared that our balcony overlooked an alley.  The room was clean and comfortable, and I had my french toast for breakfast; that’s all that mattered.  Oh, and I also developed another habit: Rat Watch.  No, there were no rats.  But there was a window near the motel elevator which overlooked a gap between two buildings, and at the far end was the side of another.  There was some garbage against that far wall, and though I have a phobic fear of rats, I couldn’t help but obsessively look for them as I waited for the elevator.  It became a compulsion.  I am very thankful to report that I never saw so much as a twitch of a whisker, but I just had to check.

I didn’t take many pictures in Gatlinburg.  We didn’t get to hike this time, and I didn’t feel like lugging my camera around with me.  I took some with my camera phone, but they’re not the greatest quality.  Many of the outdoor shots were taken at night; the lights blur from the slower shutter speed.  I will be sharing these at some point.  I have a name for the series and everything, but you’ll have to wait for those.

We left for Nashville on Wednesday, which also happened to be Randy’s Hatch Day; he insists that he wasn’t born, he was hatched.  His mother remembers it quite differently but then she would, wouldn’t she?  We stayed at the Opryland Resort and Convention Center again.  It’s so gorgeous, and huge!  It’s been said that the Great Wall is the  only man-made structure that can be seen from space.  I say that’s only because they haven’t tried gazing at Nashville.  The hotel is so big that there’s no way to take a picture of it all.  Even several pictures wouldn’t work.  As for the inside, there are 9 acres of gardens alone, with a river running through one of them.  And the river is comprised of water gathered from major rivers from every state, and almost every country.  These garden atriums have glass ceilings for natural lighting, and it is easy to forget that you are indoors.  Very cool.  There are entire buildings within the hotel, and none of this includes the rooms themselves.  Though I shared photos the last time I was there, some of you weren’t reading this  blog then, so I’ve taken more and will share when I get a chance.

As a birthday present to himself Randy reunited with his two best friends from his elementary school days!  As luck would have it they both live in TN, and within driving distance.  They brought their SOs, and one brought his 11 yr. old daughter.  We went out to dinner and had such a great time!  I was a little worried because sometimes these things are a flop.  You discover that you don’t really care about each other anymore.  But it wasn’t like that at all.  And we SOs were included in the conversations.  There was no sense of being excluded during their reminiscences.  I made some terrific new friends and am so glad we went if for no other reason than that we had that night.  Randy was so happy!

In addition to the reunion, we went to the Nashville Zoo and the Ryman Auditorium.  The latter was the original home of the Grand Ole Opry before the Opry outgrew the venue.  But it continues to hold shows today.  And lest some of you turn up your noses, performers such as Coldplay, REM, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow and more continue to play there.  In fact, we couldn’t take the backstage tour because there was going to be a show dedicated to guitars the following day, and the musicians were rehearsing onstage.   We were able to tour the rest of the building, though, and saw some great exhibits.  My favorite were the John and June Cash display, and Patsy Cline.  I just love Patsy!  After we left the auditorium we went to Panera and ate outside where the birds were watching for scraps.  At first it was cute.  But then I noticed that one by one they were stealthily surrounding us and I was distinctly reminded of Hitchcock’s The Birds.  At this point it became a little creepy.  I distracted them with some chips so Randy and I could make our getaway!

What else?  Hm.  We went to the Rainforest Cafe, did a (very) little shopping, and saw two movies: Ice Age 3, and Harry Potter.  The funny thing about Harry Potter is that we have now seen the last 3 movies in TN.  They always seem to be released while we’re there!  Must be a little Hogwart’s magic.  The nice thing about that theater is that the seats were well-cushioned and reclined.  For the most part I was able to watch comfortably, and enjoy the show.  Speaking of shows, we went to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday night; it’s tradition.  As always we had good seats because Randy orders tickets well ahead of time.  Roy Clark was there, funny as ever, and Hal Ketchum performed with two little girls who were either his daughters or granddaughters, I’m not sure which.  It was so cute!  They’re only about 3 to 7 yrs old I think.  The older pretended to play the guitar and sing, while the younger one stood there and danced a little.  Hal kept watching them with a smile on his face as he played and sang.  It was fun to see.  There were a couple of comedians.  Ask me about T Bubba sometime… he’s hilarious!  But I won’t get into his spiel now; this has gone on long enough.

I guess those are the highlights.  I’m sure at some point I’ll remember the funny stories I kept telling myself to remember for you.  I’m still sorting through photos and will post some here.  The majority will end up on Flickr I think, and I’ll provide a link to them when they’re ready.  For now, here’s one to represent Gatlinburg, and one for Nashville:

Some Thoughts

June 14, 2009
  • Tuscany is beautiful
  • I’m tired of Tigerstar.  I tolerated him in the first Warrior series because he was part of the plot line.  His presence in the second Warrior series was a tremendous irritant.  I’m gritting my teeth at his presence in this third series.  I get the concept, the reasoning.  But… enough already.
  • Tis the season of a million and one wedding-related shows.
  • While several interesting cake shows have cropped up, none beats Ace of Cakes.  Careful if you follow the link; a video starts to play.
  • I don’t know what I want for supper.  Any suggestions?
