Pop Psychology: A Rant

December 31, 2009

I hate when celebrity “doctors” (who most of the time aren’t actually psychologists or psychiatrists) say “I didn’t treat so-and-so but…”

Stop right there.

You haven’t treated this person.  You have no idea what the story is.  You are basing an opinion on gossip and rumors, adding to them with your conjecture.  You go on air making a diagnosis without once speaking to those involved.  At best you are irresponsible.

You’re an ass.

And if you have spoken to or treated the celeb, then you are breaking the code of ethics.

Either way…

shut up.

Withdrawal

December 29, 2009

Something evil took out our cable company’s fiber optics; cable, internet, and their phone service went out all over the northwest corner of Connecticut.  I just went without cable or internet (gasp!) for 11 hours.  I don’t actually mind not being online or not watching television when it’s my choice.  It’s having the option taken from me that makes me twitch.  It wouldn’t have been so bad if I had a decent book to read, but I didn’t.  Rather, I have unread books but none of them appealed.  Don’t you hate when that happens?  It’s not something you can force.

Anywho, I dug out my Evil Under the Sun Wii game and played that for a few hours until I got stuck and needed a break.  Randy came home and we watched several episodes of NCIS until… at last! … cable and internet returned.  Still, we love NCIS, so it wasn’t a hardship.  Did you know that Pauley Perette (“Abby”) is 40 and has a Masters in Criminology?  Cool.

All of this goes to show that I need to make a run to the bookstore soon.  Thankfully my sister gave me a gift certificate to one.

Hope She’s Got a Sense of Humor

December 28, 2009

My poor brother.

He met someone special in Boston.  She gorgeous, talented, intelligent.  He came home for Christmas and she came out to join him today.  He had a special evening planned: take her out for a scenic twilit tour of our picturesque corner of the world followed by dinner at a posh Japanese restaurant.

During the drive, however, he made the mistake of choosing to cross a patch of icy, low-lying road; we’ve had a lot of freezing rain lately, and this road is known for flooding.  Drew hasn’t been around though and didn’t know how much precipitation we’ve gotten.  He almost made it across but, at the last moment, the rear tires fell through the ice and sank a foot or so into water.

They were stuck.

He called AAA who misunderstood the situation and told him they wouldn’t help him- he had to call the fire department to get him out.  I think they thought he was trapped in flood waters.  He called us because a) this happened in our town and b) Randy knows the guys in the local fire department.  Randy told Drew that the fire department doesn’t do this sort of thing, that Drew needed a wrecker.  Randy suggested that AAA didn’t understand what was going on.  Drew called them back and they agreed to come get him.  Meanwhile he needed me to give him the phone number for the restaurant so he could cancel their reservations.

This was her first time here and he wanted to impress her.  I’m sure it made an impression, I just don’t think it’s the one he was hoping for.

Have you ever been really into someone and had everything go wrong?

Yeah.  Sucks, doesn’t it?

Night Out

December 27, 2009

One of Randy’s childhood friends is up visiting family for the holidays; he’s a country singer in Nashville.  Donny has a gig in a nearby town tonight so I sent Randy, my SIL, her husband, and some other friends off to see Donny play and hang out for awhile.  Naturally I was invited, too, but am not up to it.  I told his sister and her husband to just make sure that Randy wiped off all the lipstick from his neck and collar before returning him home to me; who knew what floozy he’d meet and hook up with?  I told them he could do whatever he likes as long as there’s no evidence for me to find. *G*

My husband adores me and would never cheat on me.  But look at it this way… at least if he screwed up tonight, he’d be providing new material for Donny’s next CD.  ;)

A Peaceful Christmas

December 26, 2009

It was a very simple day, which I think is the best.  We spent time with family feasting and  trading mostly homemade presents.  Nobody had any money this year and it didn’t matter.

Though I asked him not to, Randy did buy me a present; he gave me a Garmin GPS unit for my car.  I have to travel in and around Hartford more often now and he worries about me.  I don’t have any money and didn’t have a proper present to give him in return.  I still had something for him, though.  He told me he didn’t want anything except my love for Christmas, so that’s what I gave him: I wrote him a love letter.  He assured me that it was the perfect gift.

I hope that, whether you celebrated Christmas or not, you had a beautiful and peaceful day.

Well…

December 23, 2009

…hello there!

Another semester successfully completed and not a minute too soon!

The classes were interesting for the most part; any class will have its dry sections.  Philosophy of Race was a bit of a pill by the end.  You can only be beaten down for being white for so long before you get defensive.  It was fascinating, eye-opening, and I learned a lot, but I think the way forward must be based on mutual respect and understanding.  Revolution and acts of terrorism (as recommended by Fanon, and a classmate) seem counter-productive to me.  The rest of my classes were great, and the Curse of Statistics was broken: I got an A.  In fact my lowest grade was an A-.  All’s well that ends well.  I’m not completely in love with the school yet; it’s an adjustment.  But I know I will settle in.  My first semester at NCCC was the same way. *shrug*  I’ve chosen a concentration in forensic psychology and am taking Victimology next semester.  Also on tap are Research Methods, Critical Writing (both of these required for grad), Human Sexuality, and Islam.

So that’s school.

My back is still a big problem.  It’s been something like 7 months since I’ve been able to work, maybe 8.  I’m broke, and it’s Christmas.  I’m making a lot of presents this year, but that’s okay.  I like the way it’s all turning out.  I did all of my stressing around Thanksgiving.  I can’t be bothered getting stressed now.  Over the summer I: went to Dr. several times, went for physical therapy, went to an orthopedist, went to a neurologist.  I’ve had x-rays, and MRI, a something-or-other at the neurologist which involved being poked with needles and having electric current run through me, an ultrasound (which turned up gall stones, something totally unrelated and for which I may need surgery), and blood tests.  A couple of weeks ago I went to the chiropractor.  Out of everyone I’m seeing the most results with him, though the peripheral neuropathy and back pain persists.  We’ve just begun a more aggressive treatment program and I’m hopeful it will help.

Whatever.

The bathroom was finished a couple of months ago.  I may have mentioned that.  I put some pics of it up on FB and will add them here when I get the chance.  Just waiting for the motivation to strike.  I’ve been extremely lazy and often uncommunicative lately.

I don’t know what on earth possessed me to throw out that creative writing challenge, but I haven’t forgotten it despite all appearances.  I will do it, I promise!  Rather anticlimactic by then probably.  Sorry!  I’ll do my best.

I’ll leave you with a couple of photos I took recently…

bhawk

This hawk has been hanging out in our backyard lately, watching the house.  Methinks I’m being stalked.
